Light & Shadow

Artist Kumi Yamashita was born in Japan and currently lives and works in New York. She is fascinated by shadows, as for her, shadows “symbolize another dimension life, perhaps something even more real than its holder”.

Kumi always begins a new work with making sketches to determine the scale of her work and to be as precise as possible. To help her achieve the precision she needs, she also uses photography to position the objects and complete her sketches. For Yamashita, the biggest challenge is to create a natural yet recognizable human visible in the shadow.

With a little help of light, her origami papers turn to faces, the aluminum plates turn into a child, numbers turn into a silhouette and a white sheet turns into a woman. Kumi Yamashita “strives for simplicity and elegance and hopes her work can affect someone without the need for context”.
