While endometriosis is mainly characterised by severe pelvic pain around the menstruation, the condition includes much more than just pain and tissue formation around the female reproductive organs. Endometriosis influences the metabolism in liver and adipose tissue and frequently goes hand in hand with systemic inflammation. Besides this, some women with endometriosis become more sensitive to pain and they suffer from infertility, fear, and depressive complaints more often than their healthy peers. This is outlined by American scientists in their review article in The Lancet.
