- Large chance of injuries during a growth spurt
- Wait until after puberty before specialising
- Make children exercise a lot and in varied ways
Running is a safe sport for children if the child’s growth is considered in the progression of training and during training. For motor development and a healthy structure of bones, tendons, and muscles it is essential that children alternate running with other physical activities, such as jumping, cutting, and turning. Furthermore, children who run should have a sufficiently healthy diet to support their normal growth. These are some of the recommendations given by international scientists in their consensus statement on running in children aged below 13 years and adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 years.
