Physiotherapists’ preparedness to prescribe exercises

Are they familiar with physical activity and exercise guidelines?

Although the majority of physiotherapists dealing with musculoskeletal pain agree that their role comprises prescribing aerobic exercise and resistance training, a smaller portion feels they have the training and/ or skills to do so.

Moreover, only a small minority of physiotherapists is able to correctly name aerobic exercise and resistance training guidelines. The number of physiotherapists able to state general physical activity guidelines was higher.

The researchers therefore concluded that a significant percentage of physiotherapists lack knowledge and training to provide physical activity advice, and to prescribe exercise training to people with musculoskeletal pain.
