Forty-four percent of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries is a non-contact injury, 44 percent is an indirect contact injury, and only 12 percent of ACL injuries is sustained as a result of direct contact.
The main play situations leading to ACL injuries were pressing and tackling (55 injuries), being tackled (24 injuries), regaining balance (19 injuries), and jump landing (8 injuries). Knee valgus stress was the most frequent injury mechanism across all the play situations.
Injury prevalence was highest at the beginning of the season (September to October), followed by the end of the season (March to May).
